Class Act

I'm loathe to commend a New England sports hero for anything, but Tom Brady's acceptance speech upon receiving Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year Award last week (video) was a class act:

"Fifteen years ago, I was a freshman in high school. I started out as the backup quarterback on a team that was 0-8. You can imagine how bad I was. I couldn't even start on a team that didn't win a game. I want to read you something that Leigh Montville wrote about Joe Montana [in the 1990 Sportsman of the Year profile]:
'You look at the poster on the bedroom wall. You could be Joe Montana. Yes, you could. You throw your official NFL ball into the air, narrowly missing the model airplanes hanging from the ceiling by string. You catch the ball and dive onto the bed. Montana to Rice. Touchdown. You could do that. You could hear the same noises Joe Montana hears. You could do the same things he does. Yes, you could.'
"That was me 15 years ago. "I think about this article [profiling Brady in this week's SI], and maybe there's a kid out there who's going to read this article and think big, and have just as big a dream as I had when I read the article on Joe. I think that's something that would mean more to me than any award that I could ever get."

I am confused by Tom Brady. He tries hard to be everyman, which this speech reflects. But then he also has that Joe Namath streak of glitz and glam. And then he just has those bizarre moments, like when he confessed to the nation that he likes to cruise the net for porn. Hmmm?

I do like the take that Brady's speech will inspire a young buck out there.

John, you evidently know alot more about Tom Brady than I do. :-) I just know he makes the inner Yankee in me sick.

Jeremy, are you saying he's a nice guy? Don't nice guys make Yankee fans sick? ;-)

I'm not qualified to judge his niceness, just that his speech was classy. :)
