A fresh face, refreshing voice

One of Time's 25 was a man named Brian McLaren. Although I've heard his name mentioned a couple times in the last few years, I had never read any of his books, heard him speak, or known much about his ministry. But after watching the clips from his appearance on Larry King last week, I'm thinking he's someone I need to pay attention to.

I agree with you on this one. I got his most recent book for Christmas and got into it, but then my grad class started and its all I can do to keep up there. I'm looking forward to a break so I can get back into the book. Very good stuff!

J, I haven't read McLaren yet but I hear on one hand he's good at bridging the gap between the gospel and the postmodern culture, and on the other that he's too apologetic about the stumbling-block nature of the gospel and too soft on substitutionary atonement. Walking the line of faithfulness and relevance can be a razor's edge I suppose. It's best to fall on the faithfulness side if you gotta fall somewhere, but it seems the emerging church types often go the other way.

Also, Time magazine seems as qualified to publish a list on Christanity as I am to post one on NASCAR.

Hmm ... it would be fun to read one of his books together and exchange feedback online. Interested?

Time was careful in how it posed its list, calling it "most influential." That's an ambiguous phrase that they clearly defined on their terms.

Matt and I are going to read A Different Kind of Christian together. Anyone want to join us in an online, pseudo book club experience?
