Mac users - help wanted

Xcel is picking up 6 G3s this afternoon that were donated to one of our youth centers. The problem: empty harddrives. Any tips for accessing free Mac software licenses?

What speed are they (e.g. 400 mhz, 600mhz)? Apple doesn't require all the hoops that MS does, so one disk will fire all of them up. Still, honesty is encouraged, especially in a ministry. ;-)

The speed is important because Mac OS X doesn't work at less than 350 mhz (if I remember correctly), so slower processors will require Mac OS 9, a much different beast. The amount of RAM will also impact the Mac OS X-ability of the computers (128 mb is minimum, I believe).

There are plenty of "early adopters" in the Mac community, so some may have 10.3 disks that they don't need because they've already upgraded. They can pass along the 10.3 disks for your use. I'll ask the question amongst my Folding team, as I'm sure there's plenty of folks who'd be happy to help.

Go to my web site and send me a message with your email address (hit the "Send Me a Message" button at the bottom of the page. If there's a positive response, I'll let you know.

If this is true, you should be able to contact Apple and they'll get you the original system that would have sold with your computers. If it's OS 9, I'm not sure how good that is. If it's OS X 10.2 or later, that's very cool! I tend to doubt that it would be that recent, however.
